Site Preparation and Grading

Site Preparation and Grading in Waco

Before anything gets built, a lot has to be shaped to plan. Mrskimsgrill strips topsoil, balances cut and fill, and takes a raw parcel from rough grade to finish grade, setting pad elevations and the drainage slopes your engineer called for. On the Houston Black clay around Waco, the moisture in the ground when we grade is what decides whether that pad holds, so we time the work to the season.

Why Grading Timing Matters Here

Central Texas swings from a soaked spring to a cracked, bone-dry August, and expansive clay reacts to both. Grade and compact a pad while the clay is at workable moisture and it sets firm. Cut the same ground during a saturated week and it pumps and ruts under the machine. We read the forecast off the Balcones Escarpment and schedule accordingly, which keeps a job to one clean pass instead of a redo.

Our Process

We call 811 two business days ahead so utilities are marked, strip and stockpile topsoil, then run laser and GPS grade control to cut and fill to plan. Engineered fill goes down in controlled lifts, each compacted to roughly 95 percent of maximum dry density and checked against a Proctor test. Positive slopes carry water away from the structure before the first storm.
